The Construction Accountant is responsible for managing the financial activities of construction projects, ensuring accurate cost tracking, timely reporting, and effective coordination with project managers and field teams. This role supports day-to-day accounting functions including job cost accounting, billing, AP/AR, and month-end close, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage job cost accounting for multiple construction projects, ensuring accurate coding, posting, and cost allocation.
- Prepare, review, and maintain project financial reports, including cost-to-date, budget vs. actuals, committed costs, and cash flow summaries.
- Process and reconcile AP/AR related to subcontractors, suppliers, equipment rentals, labor charges, and project expenditures.
- Support monthly and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial schedules.
- Collaborate with project managers to review budgets, update forecasts, verify costs, and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain contract documentation, change orders, purchase orders, lien waivers, and compliance records.
- Prepare progress billing, T&M billing, and assist in collections as needed.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, GAAP standards, and construction industry best practices.
Requirements:
- Construction accounting experience required (job cost, project billing, cost reporting).
- Hands-on experience with Timberline / Sage 300 (bookkeeping) for job cost entries, AP/AR, and financial reporting.
- Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to partner effectively with project managers and field teams.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving ability.
